21st Century Modern Day Haitian Heroes

Chef Leen has taken on an extraordinary mission: 192 hours of non-stop cooking, from Monday, April 7 to Tuesday, April 15, 2025, aiming to enter the Guinness World Records and elevate Haitian cuisine to the world stage. Basically, she cooked every type of Haitian food without any break for 192 hours.

Carimi, a beloved Haitian konpa group, made history by selling out the UBS Arena in New York on December 27, 2024, marking their second reunion since disbanding. This sold-out concert, with over 19,000 attendees, cemented their status as the first Haitian music group to fill the venue.

Chibly Langlois, a Haitian Catholic bishop, made history by becoming the first and only Haitian cardinal in history. He was appointed Cardinal-Priest of San Giacomo in Augusta by Pope Francis in 2014, a Roman church that had never been the titular church of a Catholic cardinal before. Langlois also participates in the Vatican papal conclave, which means he was one of the people who got to vote to choose a new pope.

The old Pope has recently passed away and a new Pope has been chosen in May 2025. Nixon Camilien, PhD Pope Leo XIV, the first American-born Pope, has roots in New Orleans, including ties to the Creole and Haitian communities. His mother, Mildred Martinez, was the daughter of Haitian-born Joseph Martinez and New Orleans native Louise Baquié, who were Black property owners. While Prevost was born in Chicago, his family's history in New Orleans, specifically in the 7th Ward, is well-documented.


Wyclef Jean is a well-known Haitian rapper, singer, and record producer. He was born in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti, and immigrated to the United States as a child.


Naomi Osaka is a famous Tennis Player of Haitian descent. Her father, Leonard Francois, is Haitian. She was born in Japan to a Japanese mother and a Haitian father.


Jason Derulo is a famous singer, songwriter, and dancer. He was born in Florida to Haitian parents. His parents are from Haiti, and his first language was Haitian Creole. He has spoken openly about his pride in his Haitian heritage.


T-Vice is a Haitian Konpa band currently based in Miami, Florida. The band was formed in 1992 by brothers Roberto and Reynaldo Martino. They were musically inspired by their father, Robert Martino, the lead guitarist of the classic Haitian Konpa band Top Vice.


Fridayy is a singer, songwriter, and record producer. He was born in Philadelphia, but his parents are from Haiti, and he has a strong connection to Haitian culture, incorporating it into his music.


Joé Dwèt File is a French-Haitian singer who is known for his konpa music and has achieved international recognition. He has released a platinum-selling single.


Jessie Woo is a famous singer, personality, and comedian who was born in Montreal, Quebec, to Haitian parents. Jessie got her start singing in the church where her father preached and her mother was the choir director.


Emeline Michel was born in Gonaives, Haiti, and has been called "The Joni Mitchell of Haiti." Her songs merge native Haitian compas and rara music with jazz, pop, bossa nova, and samba. She is a well-accomplished dancer, versatile vocalist, songwriter, and producer.


Michael Brun is a Haitian DJ and record producer who was born and raised in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, to a Guyanese mother and a Haitian father. He identifies as Haitian and is proud of his heritage, often incorporating it into his music and work.


Steph Curry is a professional basketball player and point guard for the Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association and has Haitian ancestry. His mother, Sonya Curry, is of mixed heritage, and her mother, Candy Adams, was born in Haiti in the 1940s. This makes Stephen Curry one-quarter Haitian. The Haitian community often views this connection with pride.
